Teaching a puppy to come when called

Your puppy follows you everywhere now. Turn that into a recall that lasts into the teenage months and beyond.

Young puppies stick to you like glue. That’s a gift: use it to make “come” the best word in your puppy’s world before the independent teenage phase arrives.

Make coming to you amazing

Every time your puppy comes to you, something good should happen: a tasty treat, a game, a cuddle if they like it. Never call your puppy for something they dislike, like a bath or the end of play. Go and get them instead.

Frequently asked questions

When should I start recall training?

As soon as your puppy comes home. Young puppies naturally follow you, which makes it the perfect time to build the habit.

Why did my puppy's recall suddenly get worse?

Adolescence. Between about 6 and 18 months many dogs test their independence. Go back to easier settings and better rewards; it comes back.
